China is also the European Union’s largest trading partner
In 2025, China’s foreign direct investment in Europe reached a seven-year high, making Europe the largest destination for Chinese investment among high-income countries.
Given the complex political context, China’s importance to Ukraine is only increasing

Over the past twenty years, Chinese companies have achieved what no one believed possible: they have entered the US and European economies and rewritten the rules there. I’m interested in exactly how they did it — the mechanics, not the hype. And this isn’t just an abstract concept for us: we have more in common with them than it seems. We have limited resources; we need to survive; we need to be quick and resourceful. Ukraine can do with Europe what China has done with the world.
This is what Lola Woetzel— director of the McKinsey Global Institute, the world’s leading business research centre — teaches us. She is a co-founder of McKinsey’s China practice and has lived in China for forty years. She is also one of the few people who taught me how to grow KSE into a global organisation, and she now sits on the KSE board of directors.
