How Field Visits Work in the Management in Subsoil Use Program

How can a company make a new facility financially viable in an unpredictable market? Where can a mining and processing plant find opportunities to cut unnecessary costs? How can production capacity be increased within just a few months without disrupting operations? These are the management challenges that students of the Management in Subsoil Use Program at KSE Business School work to solve. They take a hands-on approach: visiting companies, analyzing real business data, and presenting their proposed solutions to the people responsible for evaluating them.

Four Companies, Four Management Challenges

Students from the program's first cohort visited four sites, each presenting a different management challenge.
1. United Mining and Chemical Company, Irshansk, Zhytomyr Region
Participants analyzed the company's financial performance, identified weaknesses, and developed proposals to address them. They presented their findings directly to the company's management. This format gave students the opportunity to go through the entire process, from data analysis to presenting and defending their management recommendations.

2. DTEK Oil & Gas and the Machukhy Community, Poltava Region
This visit focused on people rather than numbers: how extractive companies build relationships with local communities and other stakeholders. Participants examined a real company case and explored ways to establish effective cooperation with those affected by its operations.

3. Cersanit Minerals
The challenge seemed straightforward: increase production capacity while reducing operating costs. However, tight deadlines made the task more complex. Students had to consider production capabilities, available resources, and the financial implications of proposed changes simultaneously.

4. Zakhidnadraservis Group, Lviv Region
Students worked on an investment case: would building a new facility make business sense under uncertain conditions? Participants assessed the risks and factors that could influence the decision to proceed with the project.

Real Business Data Instead of Classroom Scenarios

What sets these field visits apart is that students work with actual company data rather than hypothetical scenarios designed for classroom exercises. The figures reflect real business constraints, making the analysis as demanding as the challenges managers face in their own companies.
This approach teaches participants to see a company as an interconnected system, where decisions in one area affect operations elsewhere. Expanding production capacity brings additional costs and operational challenges, while investment projects must be evaluated against the uncertainties facing the business.

One Case, Multiple Perspectives

The program brings together company executives, technical specialists, and managers who are just beginning their careers in the extractive industry. This diversity of professional backgrounds allows participants to examine the same case from different perspectives. What a CEO sees as a risk, an engineer may recognize as an opportunity.
For Serhii Troian, Project Manager at BGV Group, one of the main reasons to participate in field visits is the opportunity to observe how managers at other companies operate and learn from their successful practices.

After each visit, participants can identify which approaches could work immediately in their own companies, which would require adaptation, and which would not be suitable for their business.
This is the core purpose of the practical component of the Management in Subsoil Use Program: to equip managers with the skills to analyze business operations comprehensively, navigate uncertainty, and make data-driven decisions.

Next Program Intake
